Here we have the OR SWITCH made by the North Coast Modular Collective in collaboration with Ali Modular (Ali The Architect) and AFRORACK. It’s a two channels of 3 input analogue OR combining made to merge gate signals and then switch between both channels of merged / mixed rhythms. It’s a 3HP passive design meaning it needs no power and that we can also patch signals in reverse – switching a single input to a potential 6 outputs for signal distribution (with a quirk noted below)
We can think of OR combiners as simply mixing together gate signals, which is what happens here. But when mixing modulation and audio we get an analogue logic MAX function where the output follows the maximum voltage present across all 3 inputs. It also half wave rectifies anything coming through the inputs – useful for create stages of holds in modulation and for crunchy audio FX. When we patch signals in reverse back through the output to the inputs we get a quirky half wave rectification that works in the opposite way. Where it clips out all positive voltages and only lets negative voltages through.
It’s a seemingly simple module that I’ve found various uses for by pushing it around with signals that maybe weren’t intended to be used.
