Recently a picture of Vangelis made the rounds across the internet after a screenshot was taken from a Greek TV show. As you’d imagine people turned to synth spotters to try and see what was in his studio. Here’s what we can see in the Eurorack system.
Zooming in on the picture we can make out the top case which I’ve re built on Modular Grid. You can head to Modular Grid to copy this and play around for yourselves, there’s plenty of information there.

MODULES IN THE TOP CASE
Top row // Squarp Instruments Hermod, Mutable Instruments Plaits, Intellijel Morgasmatron and 4ms SWN (Spherical Wavetable Navigator).
Middle row // Mutable Instruments Rings, Make Noise Morphagene, Instruo Lubadh and another 4ms SWN (Spherical Wavetable Navigator).
Bottom row // IO Instruments Sponde (not 100% on this – can anyone confirm?), Mutable Instruments Beads, Intellijel Planar (not sure if this is v1 or v2), DivKid & Instruo ochd and a Verbos Electronics Voltage Multistage.
THE ILLUSIVE BOTTOM CASE
Due to the angle of the image and general low quality it’s really hard to make out what’s in the bottom case. What I can make out is a 1010 Music Bitbox (not sure which model though) and a Doepfer Quad envelope. The Doepfer quad envelope is most likely the A-143-2 Quad ADSR Generator (my first envelope generator getting into Eurorack), it was mentioned on a post I saw that it’s the A-143-1 quad complex envelope / LFO but the jack layout on the left is from the A-143-2 ADSR. I can’t make out what the first module next to the BitBox is – can anyone see it?

THE CASES
The cases are Doepfer flight cases with the 9U (3 row) ‘A-100 P9‘ case on top of a 6U (two row) base case ‘A-100 PB‘.

WHAT DOES IT COST?
I saw mentions of “how much does the set up cost?” So we can break that down for those curious. I wonder how many are asking as they want to try and build the system?
Quick answer – let’s call it approximately €7200 (Euros) or $7800 (USD). I could be accurate in GBP trying to find these items in stock somewhere and adding them to baskets to total up the costs. But life it too short for that, although here’s a bit more of a detailed breakdown …
Modular Grid tells me the top case (that I set up above) costs €5076 or $5,360. That’s based on the price given to those modules when the user or company uploads that module information to Modular Grid. So bare in mind that the prices may have changed or that some modules might not even have a price on the database. It’s very rough at best.
Adding to that the bottom row modules we can make out – a BitBox and Doepfer Quad ADSR is around €800 Euros or $900.
The cases currently cost around €1290 or $1450 together. So totals would be in the region of €7166 or $7710. But bare in mind that’s no doubt wrong. Availability, actually buying the equipment in Europe or the USA (taxes etc) and relying on Modular Grid pricing is all just rough. Plus me converting prices I can see in pounds to Euros and USD isn’t going to hold up either. But I saw people ask, so there’s a price breakdown.
IT’S FUN TO PLAY SYNTH-SPOTTER-DETECTIVE
It’s fun to play synth spotter and of course people get excited about Vangelis. I haven’t spoken about the hardware synths or wider studio set up. If you spot anything leave a comment and let us know what you can see. Also if you can make out any of the Eurorack modules that you think I have wrong, or didn’t spot in the top row of the bottom case then let us know.
Gotta feel pretty ticklish to have someone like Vangelis using a module you helped develop! Props!
Yeah it’s great to see the continued use of ochd. I still use it all the time!
I can see a Matrixbrute, Polybrute, Hydrasynth, Moog one, and I’m pretty sure of the CS80 on the very right.
Exact et en plus c’est surement plus facile avec des synth a clavier pour designer des sons,le modulaire c’est pas facile!
