Here’s the new DivKid module ‘RND STEP‘ made in collaboration with Steady State Fate. It’s 6 high performance analogue sample and holds, spread across 3 channels in a 4HP Eurorack module. Andrew Morelli of SSF did some truly amazing work to make this the high performance, high accuracy circuit and module that it is. The manual goes into measurements and details outlining the improvements this module includes compared to expected sample and hold behaviour. Details & links below.
DESCRIPTION
RND STEP is a high performance, 3 channel sample and hold module, comprising of 6 unique sample and hold circuits in just 4HP.
Each channel features two internal analogue pink noise generators, and two sample and hold circuits split across unipolar and bipolar outputs. The unipolar output always samples its own noise source for a stepped random voltage between 0-5V. The bipolar output by default samples it’s own noise source (for -5V to +5V stepped random). However, you can override that connection with the sample input. This allows for sampling external audio or CV signals, and it can sample voltages anywhere between -10V and +10V with the sample input.
RND STEP will operate at slow trigger rates with highly extended hold times, ensuring it holds the voltage with minimal droop, but it will also operate up through audio rates for destructive downsampling FX for audio. When triggered at audio rates RND STEP outputs downsampled and clocked noise tones from the internal pink noise generators. These can then be used for modulation, percussion or sound FX.
Trigger input 1 will normalise across all 3 channels, meaning a single trigger can give 6 unique random voltages, of which 3 are bipolar and 3 are unipolar. The combination of both ensures you have the right voltages in the correct ranges for the sources you wish to modulate.
RND STEP is a collaboration between Steady State Fate and DivKid. The potential range of patch applications for RND STEP is vast and a selection of patches are demonstrated in the announcement video here (insert link).
KEY POINTS
- 6 high performance analogue sample and hold circuits split across 3 channels- a mixture of both unipolar and bipolar outputs
- Highly accurate sampling of external audio and CV sources
- High hold times and low droop rate for holding sampled voltages
- Trigger input normalisation from channel 1
- Only 4HP wide

will this be available in a DIY-kit eventually, like Mutes?
DivKid says
Hi Thomas, unfortunately not. No DIY currently planned and DIY isn’t something that SSF currently deal with. Same situation for the ochd I have with Instruo too.
Miguel says
Sadly this would be a great DIY’er, maybe if so I’ll pick one in the future. Great work DivKid, congrats.

Regarding RndStep registration:
Who do we register our module with after purchase? Do we register it through you or through SSF?
Thank you.

When will a new batch of the RND step module be available? Last batch is sold out everywhere! Cheers
Joe says
Do you plan on making any more RND step units? Dying to find a stable S&H like this.
DivKid says
Hi Joe, we currently can’t get the parts to make the modules. We’d love to make more though. We’re exploring options to redesign (circuit tweaks, not a v2 or feature change) so we can do it again but there’s nothing with that for now.
Thanks for your interest and I hope we can make some more in the future.
